Wind Speed Frivolities

Well, maybe just needing a bit of refinement of the code that runs my Davis Instruments Weatherlink console. The setup menu allows using a decimal point on certain readings, including wind speed. The first time I noticed the 10-minute average wind speed registering “0.00” was in the middle of the night right after cataract surgery. I had to get up and cross the room to make sure my eyes weren’t playing games.

It only does this just before the 10-minute high wind speed drops to zero. Normally the 10-minute average reads only to the tenths, not the hundredths. Actually, it can’t resolve to the hundredths and I’ve never seen it give anything except all zeros when it does this.

This is my second Davis weather station. In 2014, I bought the Vantage Pro II station. The outside unit is the same, but the receivers are different. While I like the Vantage Pro II receiver, I prefer the flexibility of the Weatherlink console. The Vantage Pro II still is in daily use on the new transmitter. The Weatherlink console connects via WiFi so conditions at home can be pulled up from anywhere you have Internet. Customizing the display is much more flexible than the Vantage Pro II. A nice feature about the Vantage Pro II is that the LCD display stays on as long as the internal batteries are good. It has a backlight that can stay lit as long as external power is applied and for a limited time running strictly on batteries. The Weatherlink color display can be set to keep the display on for a desired time on its internal rechargeable battery. However, the Weatherlink console will only run in standby mode for about half a day.

This is not a review, just making mention of the oddity in reporting the 10-minute average wind speed.
