Christopher Polhem was a Swedish Inventor and Engineer, 1661 - 1751 who invented the Polhem Lock named after him. Notice the detail in the bottom picture.

The hasp could be locked at several sizes. I imagine the more teeth inserted into the lock body, the more secure the lock was.
