A Milestone of Sorts

January 21st, 2009   by Walt

I guess a milestone of sorts has been reached with Barack Obama becoming president…. I find myself older than the President of the United States!!!! Up until now I have thought of them as older men, now, guess what? I’m the old man!!!!! Not by too much, but still it is different thinking that I am senior in age to the President.

Oh, in case anybody wonders, I am over it!

Great Britain’s NHS Loses 2000 Dentists

April 8th, 2006   by Walt

NOTE: The following can apply to any nationalized healthcare plan. My goal is not to cast negative light on nationalized healthcare, but to provide news of the event and mention this is a potential issue with nationalized healthcare.

Around 2000 dentists in Great Britain walked away from their NHS (National Health Service) contracts last week. BBC News, Daily Mail

Up to 60% of the dentists who did sign up are reported as to having signed up in dispute. This means that they can leave the program before the contract expires. The exact number who signed up in dispute varies, the health ministry gives it as around 30%, while the BDA (British Dental Association) gives the 60% number. Times Online If more do walk out, this will only worsen the situation.

This leaves around one million patients without dentists under NHS. Two million were already reported searching for an NHS dental care provider. Many patients already have had to travel many miles for dental care under NHS.

The dispute centers around the new billing system, and is said to reduce the money available for treatment.

Triple “X” Domains

Good? Bad? Censorship? Huh??

I dunno, but let’s look at this closer. Why would it be such a bad, terrible thing?? Why can’t parents block out the .xxx genre sites with a couple of mouse clicks? Why can’t people who are offended by pornography do the same? Where do they get off saying that this would violate some freedom or the other?

While a parent being able to make the Internet safer for their child, it does not excuse them from the responsibility of being a parent!! This should make it less likely for the child to accidentally stumble upon a site like the old “whitehouse.com” site while researching the president’s residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. (The residence in question is whitehouse.gov)

I know, while helping my own son, I goofed and entered something like .com instead of .net for a site. Yep, up popped Buffy-In-The-Buff!!! Whoohoo!!!! Blush & cover the monitor real quick!!

Where does this violate freedoms when governments can already block out sites at a whim? If they are going to block a site, they will! Duh… It arms parents with the means to try to make things a little safer for their children, and those who are offended by pornography will have less chance of stumbling upon it.

Many pornographic sites already support Net Nanny and other resources that help to keep kids away from such things.

It is a given that many will not like to be “controlled” and insist upon being a .com, or anything else. The whiney hineys will certainly rant and whine about that. . .

Can there be a Middle Road to Immigration?

March 27th, 2006   by Walt
It looks like a big stinky is getting set to rumble for real this week. The senate is getting ready to work on immigration reform.Demonstrations are already taking place in many cities. They are going to have their work cut out for them:

The demonstrators were calling on Congress to abandon efforts to curb illegal immigration and build more walls across the border. The Christian Post

I wonder what the demonstrators think about illegal aliens not paying taxes… Why the desire to eliminate all control? Will they be wanting the illegal immigrants to be able to pick our next president? (Wouldn’t surprise me to see a higher voter turnout among them than our own citizens – a rant for another time)

This about Frist’s frustrations in the Republican party:

His party is divided: some G.O.P.ers simply want tougher border enforcement, while others, including President Bush, want temporary work permits for illegal immigrants. In December, the House sided with the hard-liners, passing a bill with no such guest-worker program and with provisions that would make it a federal crime to offer assistance to illegal immigrants. Time.com

The “federal crime” issue here as worded would seem to make it illegal for churches and faith-based groups to even help feed an illegal alien. Will that mean it will be a felony to feed an illegal alien who is starving?

What about the temporary work permits and guest-worker program? (Reuters) Who decides just which of the long-time illegal aliens get to legalize their status? What decides just which of the long-time illegal aliens get to legalize their status?

I don’t think we’ll see anything close to a resolution to this that won’t provoke strong emotions/reactions from all sides.
